The primary aspect of a subwoofer system is the first thing to grasp. What is it attempting to do, and how does it do this? The basic concept is, of course, to replicate low frequencies. This is usually the bottom two octaves, ranging from 20Hz to 80Hz.

However, here’s the first big point to consider: just because you have a particular box that generates low frequencies doesn’t mean you’ll get strong bass in your listening room — far from it!

The more excellent power handling afforded to the system as a whole is another valuable benefit of a subwoofer. Music’s acoustic energy is highest at low frequencies and decreases as frequency increases. As a result, using a separate box to handle much of the power-hungry bass relieves the satellites of some of their responsibilities, resulting in improved overall power handling and clarity.
